Central to its structure, is the ability of the Assyrian Academic Society to facilitate functions and effectively address the amalgam of services involving teaching, conducting research, and overall implementation of public programs that are educational and informative. As an academic organization, the AAS is deeply involved in the life of its community in Chicago. In order to address issues concerning special projects and activities, the AAS hosts a diversity of educational and professional public service programs to inspire an intellectual and scholarly pursuit of learning and a general sharing of knowledge about Assyrians both at the local and international level.
Many lectures and seminars are held throughout the year on Assyrian
history, art, society and other topics of interest. The AAS has also
organized special events commemorating the anniversaries of Assyrian scholars
and community leaders. A periodic newsletter is published as a way
of keeping our members and the Assyrian community informed of activities
held by the AAS. Additionally, the AAS continues to offer Assyrian
language classes that are tailored to accommodate a university
level curriculum.
The AAS is comprised of (4) Executive Officers; President, Vice President,
Treasurer, and Secretary. A total of (6) Standing Committees; Education
and Counseling, Publications, Ways and Means, Public Relations, Membership
and by-laws, and Financial, oversee many areas and serve diverse purposes
which relate to networking within the community, maintain accurate
financial records, support a teachers council, raise funds for Assyrian-English
Dictionary Project, coordinate membership recruitment strategies, etc..
Additionally, the AAS is supported and advised by (7) members who form the Board of Advisors. Executive Body meetings are held on a bi-monthly basis, and General Body meetings are held once every two months. An Annual General Body meeting is held once a year to host AAS Elections, at such time, new members are elected and inaugurated into office.
Presently, the AAS is in the process of applying for membership affiliation
with the Middle East Studies Association, (MESA). The ongoing commitment
of MESA to initiate, nurture, host and communicate a vast reservoir of
knowledge about the history and peoples of the Near East/Middle East is
truly commendable. In a similar exercise of vision, the AAS espouses
key concepts and ideas that address many issues concerning Assyrians and
their historical development through the passage of time. Central
to the implementation of educational and research initiatives involving
Assyrian history, is the ability to work and
exchange ideas with the intellectual leadership of scholars and graduate
students who diligently participate in conferences and meetings held by
MESA every year. We hope to share the same relationship with MESA
and begin to explore the possibilities of scholarly dissemination of ideas
in areas related to Assyrians and the dynamics of their history.

(ZNAF: Baghdad) Yesterday Iraqi authorities
blocked UNSCOM inspections for a seventh straight day because of the presence
of American experts. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan is to appear
before the Security Council today to deliver a report by the envoys, who
failed to persuade Iraq to lift its ban on US inspectors working for UNSCOM.
An oil embargo can not be lifted until UNSCOM
certifies that Iraq's weapons of mass destruction have been eliminated.
Last week Iraq charged that the high-altitude plane flown by the United
States for the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) charged with disarming Baghdad
would be used to select targets for US retaliatory strikes. The flights
were suspended last week during a mission to Baghdad by three UN envoys. In
an interview yesterday Saddam Hussein said that Iraq was still suffering
from crippling sanctions despite years of cooperation with United Nations
arms inspectors and it was now time to try another path: that of "confrontation
and everything that follows." "The Iraqi people and its leadership
have endured too much. The people have endured physical and mental suffering,"
he said, adding that his decision to expel US weapons inspectors was "defensive
and not an attack on America." Saddam noted that although he could
see no alternative to the path Iraq had adopted, he was still open to suggestions
for compromise.
But US President Bill Clinton rejected Iraqi requests
for flights by a US-operated spy plane used for UN monitoring of Iraqi
weapons programs to be postponed until after
Tariq Aziz puts its case to the UN Security Council today. "They
(the flights) will resume, and if you shoot at them, you'll be making a
big mistake," said Clinton, addressing Saddam. Clinton also said
he would not tolerate "efforts to murder our pilots acting on behalf of
the United Nations under United Nations Security Council resolutions."
Aziz, who traveled by road to Amman and flew on
to the UN via Paris, has called for changes to the way UNSCOM
operates and charged it is dominated by the United
States. Aziz is to publicly air Baghdad's charges that the United
States is exploiting UNSCOM to keep the country under economic sanctions
indefinitely. But Clinton said he expected "the United Nations to
take very strong and unambiguous action to make it perfectly clear that
he (Saddam) has to comply" with UNSCOM. British Prime Minister, Tony
Blair, said he had written to Clinton in support of the hard-line US position.
China, Russia and France believe that Iraq is already "saturated"
with the sanctions in force since its August 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
On Saturday, Aziz said: "We will not retreat from our position unless the
world listens to what we have to say and makes changes to the way these
arms inspections are continued." While not ruling out the use of
force to punish Iraq, the White House has said it will wait for the report
from the UN envoys, Lakhdar Brahimi of Algeria, Sweden's Jan Eliasson and
Emilio Cardenas of Argentina, before taking any action. The United
States, which has veto power in the Council, is expected to oppose such
a session.
On Thursday the United States asked for Turkey's
permission to use the Incirlik airbase in the country's south for possible
air attacks against Iraq. The United States then sent four F-16 fighters
and a KC-135 refueling tanker plane to Incirlik. A US-led multinational
force made extensive use of Incirlik in staging air strikes against Iraqi
targets during and after the 1991 Gulf war. A joint air force of
US, British and Turkish warplanes based at Incirlik currently conducts
reconnaissance flights over northern Bet-Nahrain to enforce a "no-fly"
zone for Iraqi aircraft. Meanwhile in other news, Israeli television
reported that most of the last Jews living in Baghdad have secretly emigrated
to Israel and several European countries, after paying large sums of money
and discreetly acquiring transit passes from senior Iraqi civil servants,
it said. There now remain about 57 Jews in Baghdad, whose fate is
uncertain, it added.
Yilmaz also said nearly 5,000 Kurdish refugees
had massed near the Turkish border amid the US-Iraqi tension and ongoing
fighting in northern Iraq between two rival Iraqi
Kurdish groups.
"There are nearly 5,000 people near the frontier,"
Yilmaz told the Istanbul daily Hurriyet. He said the refugees were on the
Iraqi side of the border.
(ZNAF: Ankara) Several Turkish army tanks Friday moved toward
the Iranian border inside northern Iraq in an
apparent show of force in support of the KDP group fighting rival PUK.
The KDP said that its forces had repulsed two PUK offensives, one in the
Sidaqan-Rawanduz area and another near Degala in the south. PUK officials
in Ankara were not available for comment. The KDP official put the
rival death toll in the last three weeks of Iraqi Kurdish fighting at nearly
1,000.
Iran and Syria are both demanding an immediate Turkish troop withdrawal
from northern Iraq. Serious fighting erupted between rival Kurdish
factions on Saturday. The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) said
Ankara had deployed 3,500 men backed up by aircraft and artillery to support
a major offensive by its rival the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
The Turkish Foreign Ministry in Ankara said its deployment was a "limited
operation" targeted only against forces of the Turkish-Kurdish Kurdistan
Workers Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. KDP forces launched their offensive
against PUK and PKK positions at 5:00 a.m. (0200 GMT) along a 50-kilometre
(30-mile) front stretching from Degala, north of Arbil, to Khalifan, the
KDP said a statement from London.

The role of the Church, since it was established by the Lord Himself, was to be our spiritual guide and teacher. His instructions were to go into all the world making disciple, not a word about making kings and leaders. The Church should never have been leaders of the nation, political leaders of the people. Our leaders must be educated men and women who have political savvy and the will to lead a people.
Don't stray away from the church. We all still need its spiritual guidance and help. But we need to remember its proper role."

(ZNSC: Yerevan) The first conference of
Assyrian communities of the world will be organized next year by the Assyrian
Association of Armenia. Participants of the conference will address preservation
of Assyrian identity and finding new ways of cooperation other Assyrian
communities. Mr. "Artur" Pavel Tamrazov, president of AAA, noted
recently that the Assyrian community of Armenia now includes 7,000 people,
while in post-perestroika period 3,000 Assyrians left the country. Tamrazov
believes that Assyrians cannot be assimilated into the Armenian society.
In the Armenian villages of Verin Dvin, Dimitrov (Ararat), Artagers (Armavir)
and Arzni (Kotayk) the Assyrians make up 70% of the population. Almost
the entire
Assyrian population of Armenia is concentrated
here. Assyrian children study native language at the secondary schools
and the residents of Dimitrov attend the local Assyrian Church. Currently
the Association is trying to persuade those who have migrated from Armenia
to return to Armenia, what Tamrazov calls "the second homeland."
He added that "by immigrating to different
countries, Assyrians may lose their contact with
the communities and this in turn will promote the assimilation process."
(ZNAF: Cairo) A Coptic tenant farmer was killed and his brother
injured during a clash with the owners of the land they
farmed in the Assiut region of Upper Egypt last Thursday. Rushdi
Mussa Gad el-Rab was killed and his brother Radi injured
in the clash in the village of Sahel Selim, around 400 kilometers (250
miles) south of Cairo, with four members of the Sherid family who wanted
to repossess their land, the sources said. The law, which allows
landlords to repossess their land if they
wish to do so, reverses the land reform of the late Egyptian president
Gamal Abdel Nasser. Under Nasser's reform landlords were obliged to lease
their land at low rent and could neither increase the rent nor change their
tenants. Presently there are over six million Coptic Christians living
in Egypt.
(ZNAF: Tehran) Early Thursday an earthquake measuring 4.4
on the Richter scale rattled Tehran, capital of Iran where over ten thousand
Assyrians reside. Iran's official news agency said that there were no casualties
or damage. The quake hit at 2:12 a.m. (2242 GMT Wednesday) and was
felt in the city of Varamin, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of the
Iranian capital.
The epicenter was about 45 kilometers (22 miles) southwest of Varamin.
Virtually all of Iran's territory is considered high-risk for earthquakes,
particularly Tehran, a city of eight million people, and the surrounding
area. In March, scientists predicted that Tehran is due for a major
earthquake at some point over the next 10 years.

King Shalmaneser III (858-824 B.C) advances up the Orontes to meet a
formidable opposition consisting of several Aramean tribes, Israel, and
the Arabian tribes. The coalition with nearly 70,000 troops met the
Assyrian king's army at Qarqar on the Orontes River. The Assyrian
army won the battle of Qarqar and the major cities of Syria, Isreal and
Arabia were brought under the control of Nineveh.

There is no doubt, not even the size of a mustard seed, that our present system of associations and clubs, which we have been having during the last half century, has not the power to save us from the threat of eternal oblivion which settles on us gradually like a black ugly covercle of death. This present toy-system which occupies our minds an d activities offers opportunities for a few selfish persons whose aim is to draw charts i which their design is nothing but personal benefits and who employ the name of an orphan nation to satiate their personal greed. Even now as we are busy with this selfless task of the compilation of this manual, we feel the gradual increase of chaos; the malady rises and swells slowly like a microbe laden dust, threatening to extinguish our fragile flame of life. This situation, more than ever, necessitates the discovery and employment of a system that would save, in our fields, the few remaining stalks of wheat from the poisonous weeds and thorn bushes that grow all around.
