It presented a broad program, both technical and otherwise. The Conference consisted of two sessions featuring 10 speakers, two of them from two Silicon Valley Internet companies. The participation of these two speakers was facilitated by Albert Gabrial. About 60 people attended the conference. In his opening remarks, the Conference Chairman Abdulmesih BarAbrahem explained the objectives of the conference. "The conference committee has done its best effort to offer a program that encompasses both, community and technology related issues", he said. To this end, "we sought experts from different fields to share their information with you", he continued. He particularly welcomed the speakers from the two successful Internet companies, both of which have been involved in Assyrian related projects through the effort of Albert. Specifically Hollister Internet has been the host of Nineveh-Online, while Vxtrem is establishing the Internet broadcasting server for KBSV. Albert Gabrial gave a short report on Nineveh-Online and its current status. He expressed gratitude to the conference sponsors for their generous support. These include AUOC (Assyrian United Organization of California), George Hariri (of Chicago) and Grafeex (The Assyrian Directory). Albert reiterated the independent identity of ACNC from any political, religious, social or cultural group. On behalf of the conference committee, Albert and Abdulmesih handed over Certificates of Appreciation to the following individuals for their distinct services in context of the Internet: - Peter Jasim - For his contributions on Usenet - Gil Chamaki - For Providing Free AssyriaLink - Sargon Tavour - For Free Hosting of Assyrian Pages - William Mikhael, For the Quote of the Day - Lawrence Namato - For His Learning Syriac Program - Tim Erickson - For ATORFONT the First Assyrian Shareware Fonts - Hollister Internet - For Hosting Nineveh-Online - Wilfred Alkhas - For Free ZENDA Newsletter Brent Olson from Hollister Internet gave a remarkable speech on the Assyrian people who paved the way to world civilization. Now that they are scattered and reduced in number, he noted, they should utilize the Internet to make their culture known. Brent expressed his attraction to Assyrians and their culture (SEE BRAVO). He suggested the utilization of online radio transmission to enable a community to maintain ties. He then gave an online demonstration on streaming video and audio capabilities. Michele Davis from Vxtrem gave a short marketing presentation on real-Video transmission over the Internet and demonstrated the technology. The attendees were impressed by the quality of the video running with 10-15 frames per second. In his speech on "The Need for an Assyrian Infrastructure", Abdulmesih outlined the elements of Assyrian Networking. As he sees it, the infrastructure is not only the technical networks but it also includes the people and the skills needed to use them as well as the contents to bepresented. It is the latter, he said, which Assyrians are still lacking. He stressed that the new information technologies will be the most significant assets of the coming century. He concluded by formulating some additional goals and he suggested certain projects towards the accomplishment of an Assyrian infrastructure. Following his remarks, Abdulmesih presented a certificate of Accomplishment to Albert Gabrial for being the engine behind the three successful conferences. In the short Laudatio he praised the enthusiasm and endurance of Albert, who has tirelessly spent most of his free time in building e.Babylon, in providing free access to information to the community, in establishing and maintaining Nineveh Online and in helping Assyrian organizations to get networked. What was obvious to the rest was that this brief recognition caught Albert by surprise. The second session began with a presentation by Peter Jasim on the topic "Effective Use of the Internet as a Media Tool". Jasim described the Internet as the new paradigm which offers a reliable, cost effective way to implement global communications infrastructure for Assyrians, and capable of doing so much more effectively than any other medium of communications. He then gave a summary of current Assyrian resources and Web-Pages on the Net as well as their contents and the audiences they target. With a little planning and effort, and a keen understanding of the Internet audience and the Assyrian agenda, a very effective push can be coordinated, and a high degree of organization and communication can be facilitated for the Assyrian diaspora. His suggestion is to establish CAIR, a Coalition of Assyrian Internet Resources, which is seen as vital for the successful implementation of this program. Next, Sargon Tavour, gave a technical presentations on how dynamic web-Pages that allow interaction can move the Web to the next plateau of applications and build real world applications. As examples he pointed to stock market transactions, banking, and airline/hotel reservations that currently make use of the advanced technology and are deployed by large corporations. Thanks to Database connectivity and interface programming such as JAVA, Visual Basic and a handful of very powerful authoring tools, now these applications are available for even smaller organizations. Wilfred Alkhas, the publisher of the Zenda electronic Newsletter gave a most interesting analysis of the current and future status and impact of the new communication revolution on Assyrian social and political activism. It is his opinion that joining under one political leadership is the necessary objective. He formulated challenges on the kind of efforts needed to reach this goal. An important cornerstone of his thesis is based on the assumption that the Internet will lead towards a global democratic society that Assyrians need and will benefit from. From an analysis of the current situation he made projections to the future and internet-based communication society. Esha Tamras presented a personal approach on how Assyrians have to take responsibility in order to make the maintenance of our culture and history part of their daily life's tasks. It is his thesis, that each Assyrian is a page in the history book of our nation's history. He urges that these pages which have remained apart for too long should now be brought together in book volumes. Francis Sarguis the English Editor of the Journal of the Academic Society and an investigative reporter, presented a case study for accountability. The case study in question is the administration of the will of Benjamin S. Adams. He has already published several columns about this in 'The Kibitzers' which is accessed at Nineveh-Online. Mr. Adams left money to six Assyrian organizations for particular objectives. Francis quickly caught the attention of the attendees. His comments evoked bursts of applause. As a gesture of approval, former Illinois State Senator John Nimrod expressed his shock and disappointment about the behavior and lack of response from the organizations in question. He was especially disturbed by reports that the funds might not be (or may have been) misappropriated for purposes other than "childeren's education" or "refugee assistance". In the open discussion segment, Dr. Emanuel Kambar introduced the audience to a new organization dedicated for Human Rights. He explained the objectives of the organization and outlined some of the planned activities. He also answered open questions about its goals. Lena Mushell, a member of the local organizing committee who introduced each of the speakers also gave a closing statement. George Mickael, Rema Nesan, Ben Talya, Vivian Hermiz and Sargon Tavour helped in the local preparations and setup. Security Council has extended for another six months a program to sell Iraqi oil and use the proceeds for humanitarian purposes. The extension of the program began yesterday(Sunday 8 June). Iraq will continue to export $2 billion worth of oil over the next six months, but as in the past six months all the proceeds will be deposited into a U.N. escrow account. The bulk of that money will go to purchase humanitarian goods for Iraqi civilians. Several council members, including the United States, have demanded that the distribution of food and medicine be carried out in a transparent way. The program is designed to alleviate food and medicine shortages in Iraq as a result of U.N. economic sanctions imposed on Iraq since August 1990 after Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait. ============================================================================ S U R F S U P ! ============================================================================ "Thank you for forwarding your magazine to me...I have just returned from N. The cornerstone celebrates the construction of a new 16,000 square-foot addition to the Institute as part of a major expansion and renovation project. The public is invited to witness the ceremony. "As one of the world's centers for the study of the ancient Near East, we thought it particularly appropriate to use this ancient ritual to commemorate the cornerstone laying," said Karen L. Wilson, Museum Director. "The Assyrians, who lived in northern Iraq during the second and first millennia B.C., left detailed instructions for conducting this particular three-day ceremony, and we look forward to re-enacting parts of it. It is amazing how timeless some of these ceremonies are; although the details of dedicating a building have changed, the overall desire to commemorate new construction has stayed the same for well over 2,000 years." The ritual, which is recorded on clay tablets from the famous library of King Assurbanipal (668-627 B.C.) at Nineveh and on tablets which the Oriental Institute excavated at the site of Khorsabad, also in northern Iraq, will be narrated by Oriental Institute staff members assisted by children who will play the parts of the priest and the magician. The children will wear modern copies of Assyrian clothing. The reenactment of the ritual will last approximately 15 minutes. The ancient ceremony took place over three days. During that time, the priest made a series of earth, wood and wax figurines of protective deities. Incantations in the archaic language of the Sumerians and in the formal language of the Akkadians were recited to invoke the protection of the gods. On the third day of the ritual, a figurine, accompanied by sacrifices and purification rituals, was deposited in the cornerstone and others were buried under the doorways of the building. The June 12 cornerstone ritual commemorates a project to install climate control in the galleries and artifact storage areas of the Oriental Institute and to build a 16,000-square-foot wing for artifact and archival storage, library stacks, and a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory. The facility's improvements also include a new education center, an Archaeological Research Center for Institute faculty and graduate students, and an expanded computer laboratory adapted for the analysis of archaeological data. Completion of the project is anticipated in November of this year. The opening of the galleries is slated for Winter 1998. One of the highlights of the new exhibits will be a reconstruction of a courtyard from a Neo-Assyrian palace from about 705 B.C., dominated by a 40-ton sculpture of a human-headed winged bull. The Oriental Institute's Legacy Campaign, now entering its fourth year, has raised $7.6 million of the $10.1 million needed for expansion and renovation. For more information call (773) 702-9513. HISTORIC GATHERING OF ASSYRIAN POETS IN SAN JOSE (ZNDA: San Jose) Next Monday evening, San Jose-California will host a historic gathering of two Assyrian poets whose work in the 1970's inflamed the fires of Assyrian nationalism in the Middle East and abroad. Ninous Aho and Yosip Bet-Yosip (Diglat Dim-Ashour) will once again, come together to read the poems which have galvanized a generation of Assyrian activists from 1974 until today. Aho and Bet-Yosip were the first literary figures to have distributed a cassette tape of modern Assyrian poetry in which such classics as Aho's "Atouraya Khata" (Modern Assyrian) & Bet-Yosip's "Sloota d'Atouraya Khata" (The Prayer of Modern Assyrian) became synonymous with Assyrian liberation movement. For those familiar with Aho's uncompromising style and Bet-Yosip's revisionist writings this gathering promises to be nothing short of an extraordinary cultural experience. The "Poetry Night" will be held at the AAA of San Jose's BETA on June 16th at 7:30 pm. The program is organized by the Cultural Committee of the AAA of San Jose. I am somewhat of a student of history, and I am somewhat aware of some of the difficulties that the Assyrian people have suffered throughout the ages. In my own small way, I would like to do what little I can to help the Assyrian people, to in some small way, try to repay the Assyrian people for all that they have done for the world in the centuries past. So, in a manner similar to President John F. Kennedy, one of the United States' best-loved Presidents, ---although please understand that I am in no way comparing myself similar to President John F. Kennedy, when he stood in the shadow of that dreaded symbol of oppression, the Berlin Wall, on June 26, 1963, and in tribute to the spirit of the people of Berlin and to their quest for freedom, he expressed his feelings by saying the phrase, 'ich bin ein berliner.', meaning 'I am a Berliner.' Now, in my own small tribute to the spirit of the Assyrian people, and the Assyrian quest for freedom and unity and community, I would like to express why I am here be saying, 'even though my name is Olso, ANA EVEN ATORAYA." << ACNC '97, Modesto, California- May 1997>> ============================================================================ T H I S W E E K I N H I S T O R Y ============================================================================ June 9, 1920: dies, Paul Bejan, Assyrian-Catholic priest, publisher of numerous books, collector of rare Syriac manuscripts and books, writer, in Germany ============================================================================ B R A V O ============================================================================ ASSYRIAN CLASS OF '97 Congratulations to the Class of '97!
